Listening to Understand

Often times when we engage in conversations, we listen with the intent of replying; sometimes we're thinking about what we are going to say next before the other person is even finished speaking.  We give sympathy by agreeing and relating to what someone is saying based on our own life paradigm.

To become a more effective communicator, try listening with the intent to understand.  Put yourself in the other person's shoes and really focus on seeing things through their perspective.  Listening to understand is called Empathic Listening.

"In Empathic Listening, you listen with your ears, but you also, and more importantly, listen with your eyes and with your heart. You listen for feeling, for meaning. You listen for behavior. You use your right brain as well as your left. You sense, you intuit, you feel."
-Stephen Covey

Overcoming Struggle

Unless you are extremely lucky, you have probably faced adversity at some point or another.  One of the hardest things, I think, when you are so caught up in life and something is tugging at your spirit- pulling you down trying to drown you in a sea of angst- is to stop and take a breath.  It is so hard to press pause and think about what you need.  It is so hard, in that moment, to see how you can break through the struggle, so you continue on.  But there is light at the end of the tunnel, and you realize that you are stronger because of what you went through.  After all, struggle is nature's way of strengthening.

Here are some Tips for Overcoming Struggle.
